Electric Underfloor Heating
It is not always possible, or in some cases, cost effective,
to add a warm water underfloor heating zone to an existing radiator
system.
Areas or rooms that are used infrequently, just for meal times,
or conservatories may not need heating for long periods. Electric
underfloor heating could be the answer.
The response time is shorter and with the aid of a programmable
room stat, set heating periods can be programmed in.
There is also the cable in screed system that takes advantage
of off-peak or economy tariffs.

Why Electric Underfloor Heating?
Besides the superior comfort, electric underfloor heating gives many
other advantages:
- Energy Saving Heating
Underfloor heating produces the optimum heat distribution in the room.
This means that the temperature can be lowered by 2-3 degrees,
still maintaining a comfortable room climate. Electric underfloor
heating can realise energy savings of up to 15% if the floor is
well insulated.
- Healthy Heating
Electric underfloor heating is a low temperature system that gives a
comfortable climate without hot, stale air. It produces less air
circulation which means fewer dust particles and a healthier
environment; this is especially welcome for people with allergies.
As the heat comes from the floor, carpets will always be dry,
and in bathrooms the risk of mites and bacterial growth is largely
eliminated.
- Practical Heating
Floors in entrances and hallways are prone to dampness, especially
from wet shoes, umbrellas, etc. During the autumn and winter, electric
underfloor heating can rapidly dry up wet areas in places such as
the hall, bathroom and laundry room. Underfloor heating will also
drive away dampness in the floor all year round.
- Ideal Heating
It is common but far from ideal to install heating on the walls.
With a traditional radiator system most of the heat is dissipated
by convection, resulting in higher temperatures at head height and
above - where it is least effective. Also a significant amount of
heat is dissipated throught the wall. With an electric underfloor heating
system the ideal heat dispersion is created - warmer at floor level and
cooler at head height together with a vastly improved heating
efficiency.
- Beautiful Heating
Radiators do not contribute to the aesthetics of a room and always
influence the room layout. If furniture is placed in front of a
radiator to hide it, this has the undesirable effect of further
reducing heating effectiveness. With electric underfloor heating the
heat source is invisible and room layout is not in any way compromised.
- Smart Heating
Electric underfloor heating is operationally more flexible than
conventional water-based heating systems. During the summer months,
water heating is normally switched off, but an electric system can
maintain selected areas (i.e. tiled floors) warm and dry all year round.
The water pipes in a typical water based underfloor heating system are
over twice the diameter of heating cables and have to be installed much
deeper into the floor. This results in a "slower responding" system.
Electric underfloor heating is however normally installed close to the
floor surface which means that the air in the room warms up more rapidly,
whilst the energy consumption is reduced.
